Here’s the trailer for Terrence Malick’s Austin-set, Austin-shot “Song to Song.” A few things
- I never object to using Del Shannon’s “Runaway” in a trailer — it is one of the greatest songs ever recorded. But it is also a giant pain to sing. Written in A-minor (with a chorus in A), it sounds like B-flat minor on the recording. Some think the vocal was sped up to make Shannon sound younger. (He was an ancient 26 when he cut the record.) All of this has confused singers ever since and making poor Ryan Gosling sing it seems…slightly cruel.
- There is something phenomenally icky about someone saying “I know you do the live music thing” to anyone and it sounds doubly so when it is Michael Fassbinder saying it.
- Lots of slow-motion moshing at a dusty Fun Fun Fun and the sorts of empty rooms and wide open spaces Malick loves. Malick shot some of it at Fun Fun Fun in 2011 and 2012.
It is the opening night movie for SXSW and will screen March 10.
