- Big up to Brooklyn: The Alamo Drafthouse is opening a seven-screen cinema this summer in Medina. Thusfar known as Alamo Drafthouse Downtown Brooklyn, the theater will be located at 445 Gold St. (at the intersection of Fulton Ave. and Flatbush Ave.) The cinema will be able to screen films in 35mm and digital formats. This new location will feature the Alamo Drafthouse’s signature series Terror Tuesday, Video Vortex and Girlie Night, as well as material that will be more New York-specific. I personally am pulling for a Spike Lee retrospective hosted by Spike Lee.
- Those who had cable TV in the 1980s might recall “Night Flight,” the throw-it-against-the-wall-and-see-if-it-sticks overnight anthology show that ran overnight on the weekends on the USA Network. You could see videos (often of the punk and New Wave variety), short documentaries, random cartoons. (It is entirely possible many devout “Night Flight” fans were probably drunk or high while viewing, so many films and videos that do not actually exist probably also screened. “Wait, did I see that on ‘Night Flight’ or something?” was a pretty common thing to hear at one time.) Needless to say, it was pretty incredible.
In celebration of the entire Night Flight original catalog being made available via the streaming service “Night Flight PLUS,” along with hundreds of feature films, the Ritz is throwing a big-screen tribute to show on Sunday. Look for an anthology of vintage Night Flight with series creator Stuart Shapiro in attendance for a post-film chat. Tickets are only $5.
- Remember how the moon where everything goes down in “Alien” and “Aliens” was called LV-426? Well, April 26 is Alien Day at the various Drafthouses (and elsewhere). The screenings ones in Los Angeles and New York get the celebrities: Sigourney Weaver will pop into a screening in NYC while Jenette Goldstein (Vasquez!) and Carrie Henn (Newt!) in attendance in Los Angeles, the Mondo store will feature posters, vinyl and apparel inspired by the property through their website on April 26. There will be an Aliens pop-up stores in the lobby of Drafthouse South Lamar from April 22 through May 1.
