Most Austin movie theaters ban open carry except for…

So here is the deal with open carry in Austin movie theaters.

Texas-Concealed-Carry-Sign-NHB-28238_300Every theater I contacted in the Austin area, including theaters in the AMC chain, the Regal chain, the Alamo Drafthouse chain and the Cinemark chain, said that open carry was prohibited in their theaters and that the theater either already had or would soon be posting the Section 30.07 signs stating that openly carried guns are not permitted inside the theater.

There is one exception: The Imax theater in the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum, which released a statement on its open carry policy Tuesday morning:

“Our first and foremost concern is for the safety and comfort of those visiting the Bullock Texas State History Museum and seeing films in the Imax theater. The museum respectfully requests that weapons not be brought into the facility. As a public building, individuals with an open carry or a concealed handgun license are allowed to enter. Texas Department of Public Safety officers are present on the premises at all times and may ask a person carrying a weapon to provide proof of their license to do so.”

Check out the Austin Movie Blog (which is what you are looking at  right this second) for any changes or updates to the various policies.

Theaters that wish to clarify their policy can contact me at jgross@statesman.com or 512-912-5926.
