Mystery of ‘Phoenix’ keeps your interest (Our grade: B+)

Sometimes implausible and always engrossing, “Phoenix” takes us to postwar Berlin, a shell of a city where concentration camp survivor Nelly is a shell of herself.

The Jewish chanteuse Nelly (Nina Hoss) has returned to the bombed-out German capital for reconstructive surgery, having been shot in the face before her rescue from Auschwitz. Her face is wrapped in bandages, and she must rely on her friend Lene (Nina Kunzendorf), who wants to take Nelly to Palestine, for reasons that may be less than platonic.
