Former Austin director Alex Holdridge, who has been living in Berlin for the last few years, is coming back to Austin this week for a special Tuesday night screening of his latest movie, “Meet Me in Montenegro.”
He’ll be here with his co-star, co-writer and co-director Linnea Saasen. Holdridge and Saasen will participate in a Q&A moderated by Richard Linklater, after the screening.
The event starts at 7 p.m. at the Violet Crown, 432 W. 2nd St. General admission is $15, but you might want to book your seat early, since it’s likely to sell out.
For those who aren’t familiar with Holdridge, he wrote and directed 2007’s charming “In Search of a Midnight Kiss.” And I can assure you that his new movie is equally charming, if not more so.
It’s semi-autobiographical and focuses on an indie filmmaker named Anderson, who travels to Berlin to meet with an actor who might agree to play the lead in a new big-budget sci-fi film he has written. While in Berlin, he stays with a couple who are old friends, Stephen (Rupert Friend) and Friederike (Jennifer Ulrich.) But he also considers rekindling a romance with Lina (Linnea Saasen), whom he once considered the love of his life, before she left him abruptly and mysteriously.
As Anderson tries to rekindle an old romance, the romance between Stephen and Friederike seems to be fading, and they’re considering going to a swingers club.
The movie screened at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2014 and was picked up for distribution by The Orchard.
It’s expected to open in Austin theaters soon, possibly as early as July 31.
