Austin-based Drafthouse Films has acquired North American distribution rights to director Tetsuya Nakashima’s “The World of Kanako.”

The controversial Japanese box-office hit, which played at Austin’s Fantastic Fest and has what some critics call a grotesque tone, is based on a 2005 novel by Akio Fukamachi. Drafthouse describes it as a “relentless sledgehammer to the senses.”

The movie focuses on a beaten-down detective, played by Kôji Yakusho, who is searching for his missing teenage daughter (newcomer Nana Komatsu), only to discover that she may not be the person who he once thought she was.
