Austin director Terrence Malick’s “Knight of Cups,” which stars Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett and Natalie Portman, will finally play at a major international festival after numerous delays — this February in Berlin.
The world premiere will be part of the competition at the Berlin Film Festival, where Malick won the Golden Bear in 1999 for “The Thin Red Line.”
The plot of the movie is still not confirmed, although music (no surprise) is expected to play a big role. Some of the scenes for “Knight of Cups” were shot in Austin, in part at local music festivals.
The photo that’s attached here was taken as Malick talked to Bale during the Austin City Limits Music Festival on Sept. 17, 2011.
“Knight of Cups” will compete for the Golden Bear with the following other films:
Andrew Haigh’s “45 Years, starring Charlotte Rampling and Tom Courtenay; Andreas Dresen’s “As We Were Dreaming”; Peter Greenaway’s “Eisenstein in Guanajuato,” which deals with the Russian filmmaker’s visit to Mexico; Alexey German’s “Under Electric Clouds”; Jayro Bustamanante’s “Ixcanul”;
Kenneth Branagh’s “Cinderella,” also starring Blanchett, will play out of competition.
